Omega-3 may aid weight loss
Thursday, June 26, 2008
Omega-3 fish oil supplements may help people to eat less while following a weight loss programme, new research suggests.
According to researchers at the University of Navarra, University of Iceland and University College Cork, people who take omega-3 fish oil supplements experience a feeling of fullness, or 'satiety', for longer.
The team placed 232 overweight and obese volunteers on an energy-restricted balanced diet.
Half of the participants were given 260mg of omega-3 a day for eight weeks, while the other half took 1,300mg per day.
According to their findings, which are published in the journal Appetite, a high dose of omega-3 supplements led to fewer feelings of hunger both immediately after eating and up to two hours after a meal.
The study authors wrote: "The usefulness of long chain omega-3 fatty acids in the nutritional treatment of obesity has to be investigated further, since they could improve the patients' compliance to changes in dietary habits required for weight loss and weight loss maintenance."
Omega-3s are also thought to protect heart health and are beneficial for the joints.
