Majority of women have bowel problems

The vast majority of women suffer from bowel problems such as constipation, new research suggests.

A survey by DulcoEase found that 64 per cent of women suffer from constipation and the problem is largely being blamed on our hectic lifestyles.

According to health experts, a stressful lifestyle can have a detrimental effect on bowel health.

The researchers found that 51 per cent of women do not exercise regularly, 47 per cent do not drink two litres of water a day, 41 per cent drink coffee everyday and 37 per cent complain of feeling stressed - all factors which may have a negative effect on bowel health.

Dr Dawn Harper, a GP and author of Embarrassing Illnesses, commented: "Our bowels are often the most neglected parts of our body - but they deserve our attention.

"People know to ask for help if they have difficulty breathing but many suffer in silence when they have a bowel problem, despite there being simple lifestyle or treatment solutions. We shouldn't let embarrassment stop us from keeping our bowels healthy."
