The body can naturally lose sensitivity to insulin - insulin helps transport sugar (glucose) into the body's cells to be used as energy. This loss of sensitivity and intake of insulin can lead to high blood sugar levels. A compound found in Cinnamon, MCHP (methylhydroxychalcone polymer), is believed to mimic the properties of insulin which can help to activate insulin receptors and increase insulin intake, thus lowering blood sugar levels.
A recent study conducted in America by the Department of Agriculture tested 60 patients with Type 2 Diabetes using 1g of Cinnamon (the equivalent of taking two 500mg tablets). All responded within weeks, with blood sugar levels that were on average 20% lower than the control group. Some even achieved normal blood sugar levels. As well as this remarkable improvement in blood sugar control, triglyceride levels had lowered by 18-29% and total cholesterol levels were reduced by 12-26%.
